He previously served JDHS from 2000-2005 as a contract athletic trainer before pursing other career opportunities in the medical sales industry.  He's now seen his career come full circle when, in his words, he "came back home" in 2017 to assume his current duties and become a JDCS employee.

A Certified Athletic Trainer is...
An allied healthcare professional, who's earned a degree from a CAATE accredited athletic training program, passed the rigorous NATA-BOC national certification exam and is licensed to practice athletic training within their state.

Once certified, athletic trainers earn the professional designation of ATC and must maintain their certification through ongoing continuing education requirements.
Athletic trainers have the unique opportunity to be on the front lines of athletic healthcare providing their expertise in helping to prevent injuries, evaluating and managing injuries once they occur and then providing the appropriate treatment and rehabilitation programs to facilitate return to play/work as quickly and safely as possible.

Athletic trainers are primarily known for working with athletes, but their expertise can also be extended to those physically active individuals engaged in work or play.

Today, many athletic trainers work outside of the "traditional" setting of athletics as you'll find them working within:
  • All branches of the US military
  • Various law enforcement agencies
  • NASA
  • Physician practices
  • Outpatient therapy clinics
  • On-site industrial clinics

Orthopedic injuries are not limited to just athletes and neither are athletic trainers.
Dr. Kirk serves as the JDCS Team Physician and is instrumental in the success of the JD Athletic Training & Sports Medicine program.  Dr. Kirk attends many practices and games and his availability is unmatched.
Spivey Orthopedics serves as the preferred orthopedic group for JDCS athletics.
Since 2005, Spivey Orthopedics has been providing the very best in orthopedic care in Southeast Georgia and is a key part of our JD sports medicine team.
JDCS athletics partners with Optim Healthcare to provide access to a wide variety of specialists including orthopedic spine and one of the top orthopedic surgical hospitals in the nation.
Jeff Davis Hospital plays a pivotal role in the JD sports medicine program.  From emergency care services, to outpatient x-ray and diagnostic services, they are our home town heros and are always just a phone call away.
